Erica Werner, AP: “Congress sends NSA phone-records bill to president”

“WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress approved sweeping changes Tuesday to surveillance laws enacted after the Sept. 11 attacks, eliminating the National Security Agency’s disputed bulk phone-records collection program and replacing it with a more restrictive measure to keep the records in phone companies’ hands.

“Two days after Congress let the phone-records collection and several other anti-terror programs expire, the Senate’s 67-32 vote sent the legislation to President Barack Obama, who signed it Tuesday night.

“This legislation will strengthen civil liberty safeguards and provide greater public confidence in these programs,” Obama said in a statement. Officials said it could take at least several days to restart the collection.

“The legislation will revive most of the programs the Senate had allowed to lapse in a dizzying collision of presidential politics and national security policy. But the authorization will undergo major changes, the legacy of agency contractor Edward Snowden’s explosive revelations two years ago about domestic spying by the government.

“In an unusual shifting of alliances, the legislation passed with the support of Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, but over the strong opposition of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. McConnell failed to persuade the Senate to extend the current law unchanged, and came up short in a last-ditch effort Tuesday to amend the House version, as nearly a dozen of his own Republicans abandoned him in a series of votes. . .”

Henry Austin, UK Independent: “Edward Snowden: Becoming an ‘international fugitive’ was worth it, claims NSA whistleblower”

“Becoming an “international fugitive” was worth it because of the benefits it brought to the public, according to US whistleblower Edward Snowden.

“The former National Security Agency (NSA) worker said progress had been made since he released thousands of documents about global surveillance records two years ago.

“‘The difference is that you get a different quality of government when they are accountable to the public,’ he said on video live-link from Moscow to an event in London organised by human rights group Amnesty International.

“Within hours the American Senate passed a USA Freedom Act that would end the bulk collection of millions of Americans’ phone records.

“However, he accused the British government of trying to reform surveillance laws in a negative way.

“‘Rather than preserving civil liberties, they are trying to limit it,’ he said.

Rick Couri, KRMG: “TSA agents miss 67 of 70 explosives, weapons during tests”

“Agency says they had a busy year

“WASHINGTON, D.C. — A check of systems by the Homeland Security Red Teams found workers routinely failed to locate dummy explosives and weapons in airports across America.

The teams consist of employees acting as passengers with the single goal of sneaking dangerous materials past security checks.

“One fake passenger was cleared after a pat-down with a faux bomb taped to his back. ABC News received the following response after asking Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson for a comment.

“‘Upon learning the initial findings of the Office of Inspector General’s report, Secretary Johnson immediately directed TSA to implement a series of actions, several of which are now in place, to address the issues raised in the report.’. . .”

The Week: “WikiLeaks is crowd-sourcing $100,000 for the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal”

“In a statement released Tuesday, WikiLeaks announced that it is offering a crowd-sourced $100,000 reward for the “missing chapters” of President Obama’s Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal.

“A video posted to WikiLeaks’ YouTube channel features top Democrats speaking out against the trade deal. According to its opponents, the deal would offer incentives for big businesses, while harming American workers.

“‘The transparency clock has run out on the TPP. No more secrecy. No more excuses,’ WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said in a statement. ‘Let’s open the TPP once and for all.’

Fox: “Health insurers seek big premium hikes for ObamaCare plans in 2016”

“Dozens of health insurers selling plans under ObamaCare have requested hefty premium increases for 2016, according to preliminary information published Monday by the White House.

“The insurers have cited higher-than-expected care costs from customers they gained under the ObamaCare’s coverage expansion and the rising cost of prescription drugs and other expenses as reasons for proposing the increases, many of which are in the double-digit percentages.

“Among the market leaders, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is seeking a roughly 26 percent premium increase, while plans in Illinois and Florida, among other states, are asking for hikes of 20 percent or more. In Pennsylvania, Highmark Health Insurance Co. is asking for a 30 percent increase.

“The preliminary requests were announced as the Supreme Court prepares to rule on the validity of ObamaCare’s tax credits to offset the cost of premiums for lower-income consumers in most states in the country. . .”

Donald Kirk, UK Independent: “US preparing to face down China in the South China Sea – while locals expect ‘bonanza of riches’ from return of American sailors”

“. . . The Philippines Senate, which had voted in 1991 against renewing the lease on US bases, has dropped its objection to the American return to waters threatened by China’s new insistence on its right to rule almost all the South China Sea – including the Spratly Islands claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.

“The increasingly acrimonious relations between Beijing and Washington over the vast area of ocean indicate a rising role for the US – in defence of not only the Philippines’ stake in the waters but also of Vietnam, where 40 years ago the US was ousted in a war for which Subic Bay provided strategic support. On Monday, fresh from proclaiming the right of US ships and planes to move unmolested in waters and airspace claimed by China, the US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter was in Hanoi, listening to a Vietnamese band play “The Star Spangled Banner” and declaring: “We’re both committed to deepening our defence relationship.. .”–while-locals-expect-bonanza-of-riches-from-return-of-american-sailors-10290332.html

Phyllis Schlafly, WND: “None dare say it — except Ann Coulter”

“Ann Coulter lives up to her reputation of issuing warnings and political comment nobody else dares to say in her newest book, “Adios, America!” It’s aptly titled; she makes the case that it is goodbye to the America we know and love if we don’t stop diluting our population with people who don’t love America, don’t respect our Constitution and laws, don’t even speak our language and commit all sorts of unspeakable crimes.

“Adios, America!” brims with the scathing humor that has propelled Ann’s previous 10 books into best-sellers.

“Ann Coulter gives hundreds of specific examples of major crimes committed by illegal immigrants and, in particular, crimes against very young women and girls. She shows the devious ways the media conceal the fact that these horrendous crimes are committed by illegals whom our government should never have let into our country.

“The media cover-up doesn’t conceal merely the nationality of these criminals or the frequency of their crimes. The media cover-up also conceals the depravity of these crimes that are so horrific I can’t bring myself to describe them in this column.

“‘Adios, America!’ spells out chapter and verse on the attitudes and customs of foreigners Obama is welcoming by the millions into America, including their horrific mistreatment of very young women and even some younger than teens. Where are the feminists when we need them to shout about the “war on women”? . . .”

Washington Examiner: “Hillary is inevitable no more”

“Two new polls released Tuesday show that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is not on any sort of glide-path to the U.S. presidency.

“The full effect of Peter Schweitzer’s new book, Clinton Cash, is starting to make itself felt. Schweitzer’s simple and sound investigative work has been picked up and expanded upon by the mainstream media, showing how the Clintons have enriched themselves and filled their foundation’s coffers with help from corporate and foreign interests with business before the State Department under her tenure.

“Clinton’s favorability rating has crashed into negative territory in both CNN’s poll and the ABC/Washington Post poll. In the latter poll, Clinton’s result (at 45 percent favorable, 49 percent unfavorable) is the worst since April 2008, when she was on the cusp of losing the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama. In the CNN poll, Clinton’s favorable-unfavorable numbers (46 and 50 percent, respectively) are the worst they’ve been since March 2001.

“What’s more, Clinton’s negative ratings are finally starting to take a toll on her head-to-head polling against the various Republican hopefuls. . .”

John Solomon & Kelly Riddell, Washington Times: “Bill Clinton’s foundation cashed in as Sweden lobbied Hillary on sanctions”

Bill Clinton’s foundation set up a fundraising arm in Sweden that collected $26 million in donations at the same time that country was lobbying Hillary Rodham Clinton’s State Department to forgo sanctions that threatened its thriving business with Iran, according to interviews and documents obtained by The Washington Times.

“The Swedish entity, called the William J. Clinton Foundation Insamlingsstiftelse, was never disclosed to or cleared by State Department ethics officials, even though one of its largest sources of donations was a Swedish government-sanctioned lottery.

“As the money flowed to the foundation from Sweden, Mrs. Clinton’s team in Washington declined to blacklist any Swedish firms despite warnings from career officials at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm that Sweden was growing its economic ties with Iran and potentially undercutting Western efforts to end Tehran’s rogue nuclear program, diplomatic cables show. . .”

Roger Simon, PJM: “Keep Hillary-Slayer Carly in this Thing”

“I had been hearing for weeks that Carly Fiorina was the hottest speaker on the nascent Republican campaign circuit – except perhaps for Marco Rubio, but the senator’s formidable communications skills have been known for years .  Even the New York Times was trumpeting Fiorina’s appeal in a column describing the long lines to hear the former Hewlett-Packard CEO speak under the typically equivocal NYT headline “Carly Talks, Iowa Swoons and the Polls Shrug,” just to make sure nobody gets ahead of themselves.

“Well, maybe they won’t shrug at some point, but whatever the case, it was with some interest that I accepted an invitation to attend a luncheon at which Fiorina was speaking.  And I’m here to affirm what others have been saying.  This lady can communicate.  In fact, she’s exceptionally good at it.  Even more, she actually has something to say. And can answer questions.  Intelligently and without evading the subject even once.

“But before I go further, I have to acknowledge what many of you may already suspect.  When Fiorina speaks there is another woman in the room.  A ghost.  And her name is Hillary Rodham Clinton. . .”

ISLAM . . .

Ariane de Vogue, CNN: “SCOTUS rules in favor of Muslim woman in suit against Abercrombie and Fitch”

(CNN)The Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Muslim woman who has sued retailer Abercrombie & Fitch when the store failed to hire her because she wore a head scarf in observance of her religion.

“The court ruled 8-1 that the company failed to accommodate Samantha Elauf’s religious needs when she was not hired on the basis that her hijab violated company dress policy. Justice Clarence Thomas dissented with part of the ruling but concurred with the rest.

“Abercrombie & Fitch argued that Elauf couldn’t succeed without first showing that the employer had ‘actual knowledge’ of her need for a religious accommodation. But the Court disagreed, and sent the case back down to the lower court for further consideration. . .” ISR . . .

Susan Goldberg, PJM: “Israel Performs Nation-Wide Drill to Prepare for 3-Front War”

“The Times of Israel reports:

“Turning Point 15 will test the preparedness of the country to deal with a massive coordinated rocket attack on population centers across Israel, including damage to essential infrastructure, as well as a cyber attack that brings down the electrical and telephone grids.

“It is expected to last five days.

“On Tuesday, two rocket sirens will ring out in cities across the country — at 11:05 a.m. and 7:05 p.m. — and people will be asked to rush to bomb shelters in a test of their ability to seek cover in case of rocket attack.

Sirens, however, will not sound near the Gaza Strip after residents, scarred by last summer’s war, asked to be excluded.

“These drills are run on an annual basis by the nation’s Home Front Command. Simulating simultaneous attacks from Syria, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, local, regional and national emergency services will be involved. Home Front Command will also test a new service that will inform residents of rocket attacks via text message.

“The week-long drills are a sobering reminder of last summer’s war with Hamas in Gaza. . .”

Barak Ravid and Yossi Verter, Haaretz: “Obama: Stalled peace process makes it harder for U.S. to defend Israel at UN”

“U.S. President Barack Obama said Tuesday that the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process, along with the conditions Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has set for establishing a Palestinian state, have made it harder for the United States to continue defending Israel at the United Nations against European initiatives. In saying this, Obama hinted that the U.S. may withhold its veto on the French initiative to transfer a decision on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the UN Security Council.

“Obama made the comments in an interview with Israeli journalist Ilana Dayan on the Channel 2 show “Uvda” (Fact), which aired Tuesday evening.

“Shortly after the show was aired cabinet ministers and deputy ministers were instructed by Israel’s Government Secretariat not to talk to the media or comment in any way on Obama’s interview.

“During the interview, Obama reflected on Netanyahu’s statement in the lead up to Israel’s March election that a Palestinian state would not be established under his premiership, calling it “unequivocal.” Obama added that while Netanyahu subsequently suggested it could be possible to establish a Palestinian state, these latter comments sounded like they were made in an effort to return to the status quo. . .”

PA . . .

Nick Field, PoliticsPA: “Wolf Prepares Back-Up Plan in Case Supreme Court Guts Obamacare”

“Governor Tom Wolf wants to be prepared.

“Today his office announced that the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance sent an application to the HHS to create a state-based healthcare marketplace.

“This step is necessary as the Supreme Court is currently hearing a case, King v. Burwell, concerning whether federal marketplaces are part of the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare).

“To simplify a very complex issue, Obamacare was meant to create marketplaces to provide health insurance. It was decided this would be done on a state-by-state basis, but in the event some states refused to set one up, the federal government could come in and put up one in its place. Far more states ended up opting out than the Administration anticipated, thirty-four in all.

“The Supreme Court case concerns a typo in the law that suggests the legislation was only meant to cover state-based exchanges. If the Court agrees with that interpretation, those 34 states would be left in a lurch. Therefore, the Governor’s action is an attempt to protect PA if such a ruling occurs.

“‘I am continuing to take steps, as part of my contingency plan, in order to protect 382,000 Pennsylvanians from potentially losing subsidies that help them afford health care coverage,’ said Governor Wolf. . .”

Andrew Staub, PA Independent: “Pennsylvania drillers, who already pay an impact fee, fighting new tax”

“HARRISBURG, Pa. – Former Gov. Tom Corbett and state lawmakers could have saved some time simply by calling an impact fee on the natural gas industry a tax.

“That way, they might not be responding to statements from people such as Eileen McNulty. Monday, the acting revenue secretary said Pennsylvania is the “only state in the U.S. that is home to abundant natural gas production but doesn’t impose a tax on those resources.”

“McNulty made the statement while advocating a severance tax on the extraction of natural gas. It’s a key part of Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf’s $33.8 billion budget proposal, which would use a severance tax to pay for ramped-up education funding, economic development programs and increased enforcement of environmental regulations.

“Yet Republicans who control the General Assembly aren’t enamored with further taxing the industry, and they started to pick apart Wolf’s severance tax proposal Monday, when lawmakers returned to Harrisburg for the annual June budget scramble. . .”

Mark Levin Show (6/2/15)

“On Tuesday’s Mark Levin Show: How can we possibly nominate and elect a conservative when other candidates claim to be conservative while trashing conservative policies? Gov Chris Christie claims to be conservative while using left wing propaganda to trash true conservative candidates. His style of bipartisanship isn’t the way forward, but more surrender to the Democrats. We need a candidate who is a constitutional, free market, national security, cultural conservative; a candidate we haven’t had since Ronald Reagan.

“Also, the Clinton foundation set up a fundraising arm in Sweden while they were lobbying Hillary to forego Iran sanctions. As money flowed to the Clinton foundation, Sweden’s economic ties with Iran strengthened. The Clintons have become filthy rich by selling out America and our allies in the Middle East. This is just one example of their quintessential embezzlement while they dare to attack the rich and pretend to stand for the little guy.

“Finally, black lives don’t matter to President Obama, who doesn’t gives speeches or hold conferences on the real issue – black on black crime. Crime rates are up around the country because of the endless attacks on the police by the Obama administration. Our society is more concerned with Caitlyn Jenner than real issues.”

Joshua Krause, InfoWars: “Florida Court Rules “Off Grid” Living Illegal”

“Robin Speronis had been living in an off-grid home for many years without incident, until she was interviewed by a local FOX affiliate in November of 2013

“Robin Speronis had been living in an off-grid home for many years without incident, until she was interviewed by a local FOX affiliate in November of 2013. Shortly thereafter, the city of Cape Coral tagged a “notice to vacate” on her property, due to multiple code violations, all of which stem from the fact that her home isn’t connected to water, sewage, or the electrical grid. The city has tried to argue that she is in violation of the International Property Maintenance Code for relying on rainwater and solar panels, instead of utilities.

“Since that time, Speronis has been fighting the courts for her right live off the grid. Magistrate Harold Eskins recently ruled that she can live without using water or electricity, but she still has to be connected to these utilities no matter what. Despite his ruling, Eskins admitted to the press that the code may be unfair, “Reasonableness and code requirements don’t always go hand-in-hand.” Despite his supposed sympathies, he still feels compelled to enforce the code.

“Still, Speronis has decided not to give up, and will continued to defend her case in court. Even if she doesn’t win, she has no plans to leave her home. “Even if they board the house up, I’m not leaving…They did the best they could when they took my dogs and arrested me. It fell apart because I’m unshakable.”
